Alligate SMTP Gateway for Windows is a full stand alone spam prevention system that can be used in conjunction with almost every mail server. Virtually every state of the art heuristic and statistical  spam detection technique has been incorporated, as well as a specially adapted version of our award winning content recognition engine used by more than 3 million users of our popular CYBERsitter« web filtering product. Major processor intensive functions have been written in pure assembly language for blazing speed. An average message is processed in less than 50 milliseconds on a modest computer. A particular focus has been placed on creating a system that is self learning, self recovering, self defending, and removes as much of the burden of spam detection from the administrator as possible.

bullet

Does not 'hook' or otherwise interfere with the normal operation of your existing mail server.

bullet

Supports Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, and all other standard SMTP/POP3 mail servers.

bullet

Installs between your existing mail server and the Internet. When installed on a separate computer, this configuration offloads all system overhead involved in spam detection. Your mail server only receives and stores legitimate email. Your existing mail server can be configured as a lower priority mail exchanger (MX) for failsafe operation.

bullet

Both filtered SMTP and pass through POP3 gateway services are provided. This provides for simple and flexible installation strategies so that few (if any) changes will be required on client computers.

bullet

Internal routing tables allow the support of numerous domains and destination mail servers.

bullet

Supports AUTH PLAIN and AUTH LOGIN SMTP authentication synchronization with mail server.

bullet

Reduce internal network SMTP bandwidth and the load on mail servers by as much as 90%.

bullet

Reduce external SMTP bandwidth by as much as 40%.

bullet

Every method possible is employed to identify unwanted and illegitimate messages as early on in the message process as possible resulting in a minimum of amount of data being exchanged.

bullet

New! Now supports our proprietary MXRate sender reputation verification database. Spam reports are collected 24 hours a day from other Alligate installations and analyzed on on our central server. Alligate then downloads a master database list and uses it as an additional tool in identifying spam sources and reducing false positives.

bullet

Numerous weighted and 'sliding scale' tests are performed on incoming mail, including various forgery methods, RFC compliance, message obfuscation, violation density ratios, body compression ratios, HTML density ratios, spam hash signatures, and many others.

bullet

A highly advanced content recognition engine analyzes each message for spam and adult content. Our exclusive ActiveSpam technology uses highly adaptive pattern files that are updated constantly and are downloaded automatically every hour to your gateway server. ActiveSpam technology automatically compensates for HTML, BASE64, or purposely obfuscated messages and deciphers the true content.

bullet

Flexible scoring methods allow adult and spam messages to be identified and treated differently. Content density is measured and factored in to help prevent false positives.

bullet

Extensive whitelist and blacklist options are available globally, by domain, by workgroup, and by individual user. Whitelists and blacklists can also be 'nested' so that common files can be shared between selected users or domains.

bullet

Whitelists and blacklists can contain sophisticated patterns including specific field checking (to, from, subject, headers, etc.), wildcards, and complex conditional patterns using AND/OR logic. Each pattern can be given a specific weight. Negative weights can also be used to reduce scores when certain patterns are encountered.

bullet

Whitelist and blacklist by IP address and/or subnet/CIDR ranges.

bullet

Smart whitelisting automatically tracks outgoing email and ensures that email from frequent correspondents will be ignored.

bullet

Numerous handling options include any combination of subject modification, re-routing, deletion, hold, or hold and notify (the recipient), based on administrator defined preferences.

bullet

Recipients can be notified when a message is rejected either with a notice for each message, or have a digest sent to them at administrator defined regular intervals.

bullet

Recipients can retrieve rejected messages and optionally whitelist the sender without administrator intervention by simply replying to rejection notices or digests.

bullet

Restrict relaying to specified IP addresses and ranges and/or require SMTP authentication.

bullet

Block connections by country or allow connections only from specified countries.

bullet

Mail bomb protection.

bullet

Block messages with administrator defined types of file attachments.

bullet

Identifies common email vulnerabilities.

bullet

Detects and stops 95% of all email borne viruses and worms by allowing rejection of attachment types.

bullet

Supports full virus scanning (requires third party scanner).

bullet

Maintains internal 'last in first out' sorted lists of frequent spammers (both by IP address and host) help identify and penalize spam from 'repeat offenders'. Intelligent host matching can detect spams from the same source coming from different servers (i.e. server1.spammer.com, server5.spammer.com etc.).

bullet

Automatic adaptive "Tarpitting" of frequent spammers. Gateway response times can be intentionally 'slowed down' to discourage dictionary attacks, multiple RCPT TO's and repetitive attempts to deliver unwanted messages. The delay time is calculated automatically based on administrator defined minimums and maximums and the spammers frequency interval. This technique causes the spammers server to take an unnecessarily long time to deliver a message, and in some cases, the spammers software will "time out" and/or automatically drop the address from their mailing list.

bullet

Tarpitting can be set to defensive or offensive modes.

bullet

Completely scalable. Supports multiple server clustering and load balancing for virtually unlimited capacity.

bullet

Internal load balancing mechanism allow "round robin" routing to destination mail servers.

bullet

Internal "FailOver" settings allow you to specify a backup mail server in case of a failure of your main mail server.

bullet

Built-in spooler service meters message flow to your mail servers ensuring that they are never overloaded during high volume periods.

bullet

Built-in "system health" monitoring service continually monitors conditions and takes corrective actions if necessary to ensure maximum reliability.

bullet

Supports Syslog logging and status reporting.

bullet

Full administration application is included that provides the administrator with all the tools necessary to monitor and maintain the system either locally, or via TCP/IP from any Windows based remote computer. Administrators can monitor, start and stop all the Alligate related system services, modify settings, examine log files with color highlighting of key details, examine held or deleted messages, deliver held or deleted messages to the original recipient, perform whitelist and blacklist functions, and view statistical reports.

bullet

Clear, easy to read, formatted log files with configurable detail settings.

bullet

Held and deleted message reports can be sorted and filtered by time received, recipient, sender or subject. "Drill down" hyperlinks allow examination of pertinent log entries, original message and recipients white and black lists.

bullet

A full suite of utility services and command line utilities are provided for routine maintenance of log files, held messages, etc. for virtually unattended operation.

bullet

Administration features were designed  by administrators for administrators with a particular focus on creating a system requiring minimal effort for client support.

bullet

Over 75 pages of documentation fully discusses every aspect of spam detection and recommended strategies.

bullet

Dozens of "spam-trap" accounts are monitored by live technicians 24 hours a day and our ActiveSpam pattern files are constantly updated to detect new spam techniques.

bullet

Programs are updated frequently as spamming techniques evolve. All updates are included at no extra charge.

bullet

Several technical support options are available 7 days a week. All support is included at no extra charge.

bullet

Solid Oak Software is privately held and has been publishing commercial grade security related software continuously since 1990. With new anti-spam products appearing every week from companies you have never heard of, you can be sure we will be here if you need us.

bullet

Microsoft Windows 2000 or 2003 server. Low volume installations can run on Windows 2000 Workstation or Windows XP Professional.

bullet

Alligate must be installed on a separate computer other than your mail server. A dedicated computer is not required, but is recommended for optimum performance.

bullet

Pentium III or 4, 1ghz+, 256mb RAM, 10mb free hard disk space, recommended minimum.

bullet

Microsoft IIS (FTP only) or other FTP server required for remote administration. Not required for local administration.

bullet

Performance dependant on mail volume. High volume applications may require higher performance processors and additional memory.
